Glazing

Historically, the installation of glazing was generally undertaken by a specialist glazier, but today it is possible to purchase an entire window which can be fitted by a general contractor. In older buildings, re-glazing can be done by specialist firms that restore rather than replace windows. The magnetic tape comes in a pack containing 10m of white steel tape to attach to your window frame and 10m of magnet tape (with a white backing) to attach to your acrylic panel.

A further application of secondary glazing is thermal insulation and complete draught exclusion. Old, single glazed windows are notorious for letting all the heat escape, resulting in unpleasant cold spots and very expensive heating bills during the long British winters. The perimeter frames are narrow, so remain unobtrusive, and some can accommodate double-glazed units if space permits. Slender profile double glazing can be a good solution and will help raising an existing window toward triple-glazed performance levels without loss of the existing window.

According to data from BEIS, the estimated cost of secondary glazing is £110 per m2. Old aluminium spacer bars are conductors of temperature and act as thermal bridges transferring the cold from the outside pane to the inside.

Then, the spacer bars are manufactured to size by double glazing companies to ensure that they separate the two panes to reduce heat transfer and improve thermal insulation. This space is often filled with air or inert gases, which are poor conductors of heat. Double glazing reduces noise by using two panes of glass, separated by a gap filled with air or inert gas, to create a barrier that sound waves must penetrate. This structure significantly dampens external noise as the sound waves lose energy when passing through the different layers and the insulating gap. The thicker the glass and the wider the gap, the more effective the noise reduction.
