Window Replacements Double-Glazing Repairs
Existing window frames can have new super-thin double-glazed pane units fitted to replace single-glazed units. This usually suits casements, however, rather than sliding sashes as the extra weight can cause problems with counterbalancing. Replacement windows also need to comply with requirements for ventilation, e.g. with trickle vents in window frames and opening lights. However, replacement windows installed after April 2002 should have Building Regulations approval. The exception is where you’re just replacing the glass, not the whole aluminium window installation. Although we know our own installations of double glazed windows are airtight, we are often called out to rectify issues.
There is, however, one scenario where replacement can actually be welcome in historic properties, and that’s where inappropriate replacements have already been installed. That said, listed building consent is still required for listed homes, even if you’re hoping to do the decent thing and rectify past wrongs. Perhaps incorporating double-glazed units in the form of secondary glazing that opens to the inside. This will provide superior sound-deadening qualities than conventional double glazing alone. One of the most common defects encountered with double glazing is their tendency to ‘mist/fog up’. Sometimes this can happen within a surprisingly short period of time after installation.
If you choose to do this, there is no condoms salesmanship - all of our assessments are carried out by one of our 3 leading carpenters, all of who have over 15 years experience refurbishing and repairing sash windows. The same carpenter that visited will lead the project and work on your sash windows. As wonderful as the design of sash windows are, they do have various fundamental issues that have been inevitably caused by the passage of time, weathering and roller shutter installation general wear and tear. But many are surprised at the solutions that can be implemented to their sash windows to address all of these issues.
Planning permission is not normally required to replace windows, unless buildings are listed or located in Conservation Areas (where it applies to the ‘principal elevation’, usually the one facing the road). Companies can only charge 5% VAT on refurbishments and draught-proofing works due to a government scheme concerning renovation and energy saving works. At Cloudy2Clear, we remedy these problems promptly and professionally.
You should replace your double glazing when you notice condensation or mist forming between the window panes. This means the seals are failing and moisture is getting trapped inside, which can lead to heat loss, damp and can risk damaging the frame. Installing double glazed windows comes with a range of benefits, and so does maintaining them.
We complete our work right across the Buckinghamshire area, including in areas such as Newport Pagnell, Buckingham, Bedford and Aylesbury. I have used Pimlico Plumbers for a few jobs in the past few years (mostly plumbing and electrical). They take care of your property and belongings (e.g. taking their shoes off in the house, covering/protecting surfaces, and cleaning after the job).
