Planitherm can be used to achieve the best possible Window Energy Ratings (WERs), but it goes further, with a range of comfort features. Drained and vented glazing offers the advantage of on-site glazing, unlike the fully bedded system, which can only be done under factory conditions due to the inability to control the relative moisture content on-site. This is not just a preference but a regulation that should be adhered to by all domestic windows and doors installed. This saving is comparable to replacing the windows with standard double glazing, but the costs of installing double glazing are much higher.
Our secondary glazing is manufactured using state-of-the-art machinery to lock-in a tightly sealed frame which reduces noise levels by up to a whopping 80%. Double glazing reduces heat loss through the window by creating a barrier that slows down the transfer of heat. Heat can transfer through a window in several ways, including conduction, convection, and radiation.
With options including triple glazed glass doors available, if you’re looking for the very best insulative solution on the market, double glazing may no longer be the best choice for you. At face value, an improvement in terms of heat loss through glazing from 1.1 W/m²K to 0.6 W/m²K sounds like an improvement worth paying for. The casement Window Installation Energy Rating Scheme, widely accepted as the industry standard for judging thermal performance and written into Building Regulations, calculates solar gain as well as heat loss. This means that the triple glazed unit’s improved heat loss credentials are largely negated by the reduction of warmth created by sunshine. The solution would be to increase solar gain by using Low Iron glass, which is much more translucent than the traditional variety but can be considerably more expensive.
To address this, every sealed unit is built with crystalline desiccant (like what you find in a new bag or shoes) contained in the spacer bar. The desiccant draws the moisture out of the air gap and keeps the internal space between the panes dry. Two panes of glass are sealed in a unit (IGU) separated by a spacer bar. Commercially, double glazing was 'invented' in the US in 1930 by a CD Haven and this was later patented as 'Thermopane' by an Ohio glass company. After this, in the 50s, double glazing began to filter into the homes of Americans. The IGU comprises of two sheets of glass separated by a spacer bar to create an air gap which is filled with an insulating gas.
This water will be quickly expelled through the top and bottom drainage holes, ensuring that no water enters the inside of the window. This type of glazing is known as fully bedded and was the popular application until recently. However, the evolution of PVC glazing tapes has provided alternative methods for glazing timber windows, moving away from the expensive and messy option of butyl tapes. Double glazing allows more solar gain, making it ideal for windows exposed to sunlight, such as South, East or West-facing windows. A triple glazed window is, however, low-E glass installation more expensive than double glazing, costing roughly 10-20% more .
