Secondary sealA sealant applied to the edges of double-glazed units after the primary seal, to provide effective and durable adhesion between the glass components and spacer bar. Each of our quality secondary glazing units is uniquely designed and bespoke to our client. The addition of secondary glazing to a traditional double hung sliding sash window can reduce heat losses by 58%.

Double glazing allows more solar gain, making it ideal for windows exposed to sunlight, such as South, East or West-facing windows. A triple glazed window is, however, more expensive than double glazing, costing roughly 10-20% more . The cavity between the panes can be a vacuum (the efficiency is dependent upon the quality of the sealing), or a heavy inert gas. Argon is the most commonly used gas, but Krypton or Xenon are more efficient and more expensive.
Silver coating must be enclosed within the glazing unit so that oxidation doesn't cause the degradation of the silver over time. With hundreds of options to choose from, Everest windows are designed to meet your needs. We use the best components to make quality windows that look good with attention to detail. At the core of everything we do, we're committed to developing the most energy efficient windows on the market with the lowest U-values in the UK. For large windows, such as 1200mm x 1200mm or bigger, you can place a couple of screws immediately below the secondary glazing panel to add support and prevent the chance of it slipping or detaching.

If conventional double glazing is not possible, such as in a listed building or with stained-glass windows, secondary glazing is the ultimate solution for insulating your building. In our blog we use the term ‘secondary glazing’ for an extra window mounted on the inside of an existing window. This means you must make sure to check for proper adhesion with the latest window frame types (various types of PVC, foil or coated aluminium). Soudal takes care to stay up-to-date with these developments so as to be able to guarantee optimal adhesion.

If measured and fitted correctly, it will essentially form a double glazed solution for your windows - that in turn helps with heat retention, condensation reduction and security. Secondary glazing should always be fitted on the interior side of your window. Triple glazing is generally more efficient at reducing heat loss than double glazing, but it may not always be necessary or cost-effective. In some cases, double glazing may be enough to meet energy efficiency standards, especially if you have other energy-saving measures such as wall insulation. If this applies to you, it’s also worth mentioning that double glazing isn’t where the buck stops when it comes to the best insulative glass options. Technology moves fast, and triple glazing is now a viable option on everything from small windows to large panels.

Laminated glass is used where glazing must remain intact if it is broken, either for safety or security reasons. It is made by fusing two or more layers of glass with inter-layers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) through the use of heat and pressure. If it is made using heat strengthened glass, the pane will break into large pieces but will be held in the frame by the PVB inter-layer. If it is made from tempered glass, the sheet may fall out of the frame but will mostly stay together due to the inter-layer. Glass can also be tinted to reject sunlight, coated in a translucent film to increase energy efficiency, or be self-cleaning.
This water will be quickly expelled through the top and bottom drainage holes, ensuring that no water enters the inside of the window. This type of glazing is known as fully bedded and was the popular application until recently. However, the evolution of PVC glazing tapes has provided alternative methods for glazing timber windows, moving away from the expensive and messy option of butyl tapes. Purchasing a conservatory, or embarking on an extension or orangery is a major decision, which depending upon the size, quality and design can be a significant investment. Other key considerations are, of course, style, appearance and comfort though it’s here where the glass you choose makes all the difference. Our years of experience in architectural glass design and installation gave us a unique position to design a frameless glass solution that addressed architects' main concerns with the use of bespoke structural glazing.
Secondary glazing is the process of adding an insulating layer of glass or plastic inside existing windows to improve both thermal and sound insulation. Unlike double glazing, where two panes are built into a single unit, secondary glazing involves a separate pane that can be removed, creating a flexible and effective solution for enhancing window performance. This is especially beneficial in period properties where retaining the original window structure is preferred. Secondary glazing offers key features like energy efficiency and noise reduction, providing a cost-effective upgrade to traditional single glazing. Everest double glazed windows are constructed from a frame and a glazed unit featuring an insulating layer of Argon gas sandwiched between two panes of glass.
While this is far from an exhaustive list, what we hope it highlights is that double glazing in and of itself isn’t an out-of-the-box product, it’s a technique, and the result of a specific manufacturing method. All three glass packages in the Planitherm range – Energy Standard, Comfort and Comfort Plus – can be used in either double or energy efficient windows triple glazing applications. The section of the glazed units should be no greater than 12mm (two layers of glass + cavity). Slim profile double glazing will cost in the region of £600 to £800 to install in an average 6-over-6 sash window. Dependant on the cavity size, glass type and choice of gas fill typical thermal transmittance values between 2.0 and 1.6 W/ SqM/K can be achieved.
