The appearance of cankles is due, in part, to genetics. There are many factors that can cause , some of the most typical triggers are fluid retention, obesity, pregnancy and inactivity (prolonged periods either standing or sitting). Swelling in the lower legs and ankles may result from poor circulation, a sedentary lifestyle, or from medical conditions such as lymphedema or heart disease.

The greater time you spend on a chair, the more likely you will have poor blood flow and broad lower legs. Have frequent breaks where you stand up, stretch and move around to improve circulation and reduce cankles.
A balanced diet that contains vital nutrients can support general health and manage factors leading to the formation of cankles.
A diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains combined with maintaining a healthy weight reduces fluid retention. Eating more foods that are rich in potassium, such as bananas and spinach, can help to offset the effects of the sodium and reduce swelling in your legs.
Alcohol is another fluid that causes dehydration, although initially you pee a lot then get bloated afterwards. Maintaining sensible drinking habits and having a glass of water with alcohol is good for not becoming bloated, in addition to that habit you can maintain the health of your legs.
Good posture can help to reduce the strain on your legs and keep you from the formation of cankles.
Sitting or standing with good posture spreads your weight evenly and reduces strain on the legs. Sit with your feet on the floor and try not to cross your legs; use ergonomic furniture to maintain the correct posture.
For stronger leg muscles and to promote better circulation, do easy leg exercises including ankle rotations and calf raises. By performing such exercises regularly, you can minimize the hormonal impact of pooled fluids and as a result stave away cankles.
