1. Trap one: Spending too much or too little
According to the experts at, the first thing you should think about is whether you are spending too much or too little.
'How much you spend on your bathroom renovation will vary depending on your individual needs, the overall value of the property, the style of your home and the bathroom space,' the experts told Choice. 
For example, a family home bathroom will look very different to that of a retired couple in an apartment. 
Immediate past national president of the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA) Ray Brown told Choice that if you're planning on renovating a bathroom, you should do your homework.
'In the building industry, we've always maintained that we get three quotes for anything, and that starts from basically the fundamentals - the renovating, waterproofing, tiling and then all your prime cost items.' 
And as with over spending, you should also avoid under spending - as this can de-value your property if you want to sell.

Trap two: Doing a full renovation when a cosmetic one would do 
When it comes to renovating, countless people say you should never rip out the whole thing - and rather just do a cosmetic refresh.
Renovating expert Cherie Barber said 'there are are lots of hideous bathrooms out there with wild and wacky tiles but, once you take a closer look, you'll see that structurally you might have one in great condition.'
Contemplate carrying out a cosmetic refresh before you rip out every installation and fitting.
